Getting to samos

We know that reaching Samos isn’t exactly a walk in the park, but we promise it’ll be worth it! You have two main options: flying to the island or embarking on a more adventurous journey by sea.

Below, we’ve outlined the options based on our experience, with some tips to help guide you. To save on airfare, we highly recommend booking your flight tickets between January and March, as prices are usually much better during this period.

BY PLANE

Quick and (mostly) Simple

Samos has an airport, making flying the most practical option. Unfortunately, for those departing from Bologna (the main departure point for Alberto’s family), there are no direct flights. This means that, as with most Italian and international cities, you’ll need to make a stopover in Athens.

In the past, some low-cost airlines offered direct flights from Italian airports. However, these options have become scarce in recent years. Don’t lose hope, though—summer flight schedules are often released early in the year, so keep an eye out for updates.

We recommend using Skyscanner.com to find the best flight options. If you choose to travel by plane, we strongly recommend renting a vehicle (a car or a scooter) once you arrive in Samos. Public transportation on the island is practically non-existent, and unless you’re ready to walk long distances, having a vehicle is essential.

These details are necessary to ensure that your car will be waiting for you in the airport parking lot when you arrive in Samos (you’ll receive the license plate number so you don’t accidentally take the wrong car!). When it’s time to leave Samos, simply drop the car off at the airport and leave the keys in the designated spot, which will be communicated to you.

BY FERRY

A Journey for True Explorers

If you have time and a sense of adventure, reaching Samos by sea can be a unique experience. For those departing from Bologna (or other locations in northern Italy), the journey begins with a ferry from Ancona to Patras. Once you arrive in Patras, you’ll drive for about three hours to Athens. From Athens’ Piraeus port, ferries head directly to Samos.

This route requires patience, a love for driving, and solid planning. However, it allows you to bring your car to the island, which is a huge advantage for exploring every corner of Samos independently.
